Position Summary:

This position will provide hands-on manufacturing support, utilizing experience with equipment and production materials.  Support the full product lifecycle from research and development to production.  Provide test set-up and testing support as required.  Parachute Rigger experience (a master rigger or senior riggers ticket is preferred but not required).  Must have packed no less than 100 ram-air style parachutes (personnel or cargo).

Description of Duties:

  • Assist with the initial set-up of fabrication and assembly floor, including production machinery installation
  • Participate in manufacturing area design and productivity analysis
  • Assist with development and documentation of balloon manufacturing and verification processes.
  • Fabricate / assemble prototype through balloon production.
  • Oversee fabrication/assembly of Stratospheric balloons on a production basis
  • Provide back-up manufacturing engineering as needed
  • Diagnose product problems and communicate symptoms to leads
  • Provide  quality verification during production thru final product
  • Frequently  lifts, carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 70 pounds  when setting up equipment
  • Typically bends and stoops on a regular basis for verification purposes and adjustments
  • Perform other duties as assigned

The parachute rigger packs and repairs cargo and personnel parachutes, and rigs equipment and supply containers for airdrop.

Responsibilities include:

  • Repairing textile and canvas items, webbed equipment and clothing.
  • Inventories, cleans, inspects, packs, and stores personnel and cargo parachutes and associated equipment.
  • Rigs supplies, equipment, and vehicles for airdrop.
  • Fabricates and assembles airdrop platforms, cushioning materials and rigging components.
  • Loads, positions, and secures equipment.
  • Tests and installs extraction and release systems.
  • Inspects cargo and personnel parachutes and other airdrop equipment before and after each use, during packing and rigging, and at prescribed intervals to determine serviceability.
  • Repairs or replaces airdrop equipment. Uses and maintains machines and tools for fabrication, modification, and repair of parachutes and other airdrop equipment.
  • Performs duties in packing and air delivery and airdrop equipment repair shown at the preceding skill level and provides technical guidance to lower grade personnel.
  • Inspects airdrop equipment. Conducts sampling and quality assurance technical inspection. Disposes of unserviceable airdrop equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of plastics heat sealing & polyethylene film handling or related experience (i.e. textile manufacturing, pattern making etc...)
  • Knowledge of and experience with Foreign Object Damage (FOD) environments
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in the safe use of measuring instruments
  • Knowledge of MS Windows applications, including proficiency with computer word processing and spreadsheets
  • Skill with various shop tools
  • Skill in maintaining a clean, safe work environment
  • Skilled in verbal and written communications
  • Ability to support production requirements as required for the safe operation of standard manufacturing equipment and machinery
  • Ability to read engineering drawings
  • Ability to stand and stoop over 50% of the time
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 70lbs
  • Ability to pass vision standards for quality assurance of material seals
  • Ability to read standard work instructions
  • Ability to solve routine problems independently
  • Ability to demonstrate self-initiative in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, positive work relationships; have creativity, flexibility and resourcefulness; have discriminating judgment, tact and sense of humor

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3 years related experience, to include knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment during fabrication, and assembly.

 Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in the Stratospheric ballooning field
  • Experience in plastic heat or ultrasonic sealing.
  • Experience developing and working with automated systems
  • 5 years related experience.
